Canadore placement student shares his story with police

Steven Rickard is a second year student in Canadore College’s Community Justice Services program who aspires to be a police officer. Today marks his last day of a five-week placement with the North Bay Police Service, where he job shadowed Constable Steven Chabbert, the Service’s Gateway Hub and youth officer, and patrol officers who have taken him on ride-alongs.

This week, Steven Rickard hosted a series of talks with police officers and civilian members of the Service. His presentation focused on his journey as a Taykwa Tagamou First Nation youth, of Cree and Ojibwe descent, who moved from Cochrane to North Bay at the age of 13.

“I faced challenges when I was a student of Silver Birches School and Chippewa High School and because of this my education suffered,” said Steven Rickard. “It was only when I reached out to the North Bay Indian Friendship Centre and transferred to Nbisiing Secondary that my life changed and that I was inspired to follow a different path.”

Media were invited to attend his final presentation today to patrol officers from platoon 2.
