Stolen vehicle leads to several charges

Following an investigation into a report of a stolen hydro service truck, reported to police yesterday afternoon, North Bay Police have charged a 20-year old male patient of the North Bay Regional Health Centre’s psychiatric unit with:

  • Mischief under $5000;
  • False alarm of fire;
  • Unlawfully at large;
  • Theft of motor vehicle;
  • Fail to stop at scene of accident; and
  • Drive while suspended.

It is alleged that on Thursday, January 14th, 2016, at 1:19 p.m., the accused kicked open a security door, pulled the fire alarm and kicked open a second security door before fleeing the facility on foot. He then ran towards and entered an unoccupied North Bay Hydro truck that was parked on the north side of the hospital where hydro service work was being conducted. In the process of driving away, the accused struck a parked jeep before proceeding westbound on Highway 17 West. The Ontario Provincial Police stopped the vehicle and arrested him in Wahnapitae at 2:30 p.m. that afternoon. He was later transported to the North Bay Police Service headquarters, where he was charged.

The accused remains in custody awaiting a bail hearing today.
