Man faces charges following escape from AIPU

At approximately 10:30 p.m. yesterday evening, North Bay Police responded immediately to a report that a male patient of the North Bay Regional Health Centre’s Acute Inpatient Psychiatric Unit (AIPU) had escaped.

The man left the hospital after he broke through three security doors. He then entered the hospital’s parking lot and tried to enter a parked car that had its engine running, but he was unsuccessful. The escapee then ran onto Highway 17 West, causing traffic to stop. He was unable to get into any vehicle and kept evading police.

Within minutes of the call, North Bay Police successfully apprehend him and returned him to AIPU.

This morning, North Bay Police have arrested and charged the man with:
• One count of mischief under $5000;
• One count of attempt theft of a motor vehicle;
• One count of assault with intent to resist arrest;
• One count of fail to comply with a probation order.

The accused is scheduled to attend a bail court hearing today.

The North Bay Police Service thanks the Ontario Provincial Police and the Anishinabek Police Services for their assistance with this incident.
